7th International Sea Lice Conference, Puerto Varas - Chile. Official tour.
This is a great opportunity to know the local landscapes, navigate by the channels surrounded by amazing landscapes, accompanied with local gastronomy, and a show of traditional music and dances.

Itinerary: Navigation, gastronomy and folklore in Helvecia island

Day: 2nd April, 2008

09:00 : pick up at your hotel. Short city tour in Puerto Montt. Then the bus will drive the group to Calbuco, a town of fishermen and small farmers, 51 kms from Puerto Montt, an archipelago conformed by 14 islands. Once there, we will board a boat, that will bring us on a navigation between the islands.  During this trip, we will pass near salmon farm sites, where you will have the chance to see the cages, while we go through the channels, enjoying a taste of the finest sea products served onboard, with a glass of wine or the renowned pisco sour.

12:30 : after about one and a half our of navigation, we will get to Helvecia island, originally named Chaullín by the local people. This island is known for its old and beautiful Arrayan forest, a tree with a characteristic red bark,
The Curanto will be waitng for us. This is a mix of different types of seafood and meats, cooked in a hole made in the ground just with stones previously heated (curanto means “hot stones” in the indian’s language). This is the most typical food of this area of Chile, a way to thank nature for the food provided by the sea and the land.
We will participate in the curanto making, and while we wait for it to be ready, a short excursion in the arrayanes forest will help to whet the appetite.

14:00 (pm) : The curanto is ready! Besides the different types of sea food and meat, you will try “chapaleles” and “milcao”, a kind of potato based bread, one of the distinctive food  and heritage of this part of Chile.
After lunch, Helvecia island will be the stage for traditional music and dances played by a very special music group, Bordemar. This is one of the most famous Chilean folk band, an ensemble of music -baroque and folk- based in Chiloe legends. To hear them playing live music is a privilege, even more if they will be accompanied with a local people’s dance group.

16:30 (pm): coffee and cakes made with ancient german recipes, will be served before getting the boat to start the way back. This time a short navigation will bring people to Calbuco. If we have time, a short visit to the fresh market will be possible. The bus will take each one back to the hotel.

18:00 (pm): Back at your hotel. end of our services.
